Job Description

Position: Choral Conductor — Uniting Voices Lexington

Empowering young people to find their voice and strengthen the community through the power of music

About Uniting Voices Lexington

Uniting Voices Lexington is a nonprofit organization that brings together youth from across Fayette County and surrounding areas to discover the power of their voices, explore culture through music, and celebrate their shared humanity. Inspired by the legacy of Uniting Voices Chicago—founded at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement—we’re building a new chapter in Lexington rooted in equity, artistic excellence, and belonging.

Our work reaches youth ages 6 to 18 through school-based and community-based choir programs that reflect the racial, economic, and cultural diversity of our city. No child is turned away due to inability to pay. We are committed to ensuring every singer is seen, supported, and challenged to grow musically and personally.

Through culturally responsive music education, our choirs uplift voices that have historically been underrepresented in music spaces and center joy, connection, and purpose. Our young people become confident performers, thoughtful collaborators, and emerging leaders—on stage and beyond.

Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate, community-oriented Choral Conductor to join our Lexington family. This is a part-time role that blends teaching, planning, and community-building. Along-side the Artistic Director, the Conductor will lead multiple youth choirs across local schools and partner sites, guiding students to learn and perform diverse music with excellence and authenticity.

You will be part of a collaborative artistic team that designs and delivers a curriculum rooted in cultural integrity, creativity, and social relevance. You will work with children and youth from all backgrounds, helping them grow as musicians and human beings.

This role is approximately:

  • 50% teaching (in schools and community sites)
  • 40% planning, collaboration, and engagement with families and partners
  • 10% travel and logistics

Key Responsibilities

Musical & Educational Leadership

  • Lead choral rehearsals and performances for assigned ensembles (grades 3–12, with some 1st–2nd grade programs).
  • Deliver engaging, culturally grounded instruction aligned with Uniting Voices curriculum and values.
  • Choose and teach repertoire that reflects diverse traditions, histories, and identities.
  • Administer assessments to track student growth and guide instruction.
  • Support student transitions into more advanced ensembles when appropriate.
  • Maintain high artistic standards while creating a joyful and inclusive learning environment.

Community & Family Engagement

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with families, school staff, and community partners.
  • Proactively communicate with caregivers about program updates, student progress, and opportunities.
  • Recruit and retain youth participants, supporting each singer’s journey with care and encouragement.
  • Seek mission-aligned performance opportunities that reflect and serve the Bluegrass region.

Organizational Support

  • Participate in team meetings, planning retreats, and professional development sessions.
  • Support the broader vision of Uniting Voices Lexington by contributing to events, concerts, and campaigns.
  • Collaborate with fellow conductors, culture bearers, and program staff to ensure consistent, high-quality experiences for all participants.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A strong foundation in choral conducting and music education.
  • Deep cultural humility and a commitment to teaching music through a lens of equity and representation.
  • Experience working with youth from diverse racial, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or related field.
  • Emotional intelligence, flexibility, and a passion for community-based work.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit.

We also want to hear about your OTR (“Off-the-Resume”) Experience:

Tell us about the grit, grace, or growth you have experienced beyond your formal training—those moments that shaped your values and voice. We believe that lived experience is just as valuable as what is on paper.

Why Join Uniting Voices Lexington?

We are building something meaningful and lasting in Lexington and we are doing it together. You will be part of a small but mighty team that celebrates creativity, joy, and purpose every day. We believe music can change lives and that young people deserve the very best we can offer.

Benefits include:

  • Unlimited PTO, including major holidays and a two-week winter break
  • Half-day Fridays during the school year
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance options
  • Retirement match after one year
  • Ongoing professional development, mentorship, and artistic collaboration
